Los Mayas were an instrumental studio group from Belgium, formed in 1964. The group centered around a guitarist, Wetter (also known as Luiz Ricardo), who composed many of their songs. Their arrangements were typically crafted by a Belgian pianist, with production handled by Belgian brothers. In 1964, they released "La Playa," which became a hit across the continent and was covered by various instrumental bands and orchestras, including Claude Ciari, Frank Pourcel, Fausto Papetti, Mr. Acker Bilk, Ronnie Aldrich, Xavier Cugat, James Last Band, Yoshiro Kimura, Wout Steenhuis, and Uriel, among others. Los Mayas specialized in easy listening Latin-style music and enjoyed their greatest popularity in Belgium and Germany, although their releases were also available in English-speaking markets.
