Lou Reed was an American musician, songwriter, poet, and photographer, born on March 2, 1942, in Brooklyn, New York. He began his music career in 1958, recording with his high school band. While attending Syracuse University in the early 1960s, he formed a series of bands and was notably influenced by his professor, an American poet and writer. After college, Reed worked as a stock songwriter/musician and, in 1964, formed the Velvet Underground with his bandmates. In 1970, he left the Velvet Underground during the recording of their album "Loaded." He signed a contract with RCA Records in 1971 and continued to perform until shortly before his death on October 27, 2013, in Southampton, New York. Reed was married to Bettye Kronstad from around 1973 to 1974, to Sylvia Morales from 1980 to 1994, and to Laurie Anderson from 2008 until his death.
