Louie Ramirez was an American percussionist, vibraphonist, band leader, and composer known for his contributions to boogaloo, salsa, and Latin jazz. Born on February 24, 1938, in New York City, he passed away on June 7, 1993, in Queens, New York City, at the age of 55. Throughout his career, Ramirez recorded numerous albums for various labels, showcasing a range of instrumentations from big band to conjunto to septet. In the 1960s, he became a key member of the Alegre All-Stars, where he took on roles including clave player, vibes player, arranger, and co-leader alongside Charlie Palmieri and Al Santiago, the founder of Alegre Records. During the 1970s and 1980s, he served as a staff producer and arranger for a family of labels, including Alegre, Tico, Vaya, and International, where he arranged and produced countless releases. Tragically, while driving along Junction Boulevard in Queens, New York, Ramirez suffered a fatal heart attack. At the time of his passing, he was recording his third album with a singer titled "Preparate Bailador." He has been referred to as "the [blank] of salsa."
