Love Spirals Downwards is a musical project that began in the late 1980s, founded by multi-instrumentalist, composer, and producer Ryan Lum. The project gained significant momentum with the addition of vocalist Suzanne Perry in 1991. Their early demo tracks garnered international attention, establishing them as one of Projekt Records' most successful artists. The duo's debut album, 'Idylls,' was initially described with terms like ethereal and darkwave. By their second release, 'Ardor,' they embraced the shoegaze movement, and with their third album, 'Ever,' they explored trip-hop influences while simplifying their sound. Their final studio album, 'Flux,' showcased a blend of jungle break beats with their signature ethereal and folk elements. In January 2000, they released 'Temporal: A Collection of Music Past & Present,' which highlighted their musical evolution and featured guest performances from various artists. The first two albums were licensed to a German label, which included unique versions of tracks in their 'Heavenly Voices' compilation series. Although primarily a recording project, Love Spirals Downwards performed live approximately a dozen times, mostly at Projekt Festivals, with their last performance occurring in 1998. In 1999, Lum began collaborating with a new partner under the name Lovespirals, initially releasing music on Projekt Records before establishing their own label, Chillcuts.
