Luis Bacalov (August 30, 1933 – November 15, 2017) was an Argentinian-born Italian pianist and composer. Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, he began his music education at the age of five under Enrique Baremboim and later studied with Berta Sujovolsky, a pupil of Artur Schnabel. Bacalov began performing in Argentina at a young age, playing as a soloist, in duo with violinist Alberto Lisy, and in various chamber music ensembles. He conducted research on popular music in Latin America and performed 19th and 20th-century piano compositions from the USA and Latin America for Colombia Radio and Television. From the 1960s onward, Bacalov became an active composer for cinema in Italy and France, collaborating with notable directors such as Lattuada, Damiani, Scola, and Fellini. He received numerous awards and nominations for his soundtrack for "Il Postino," including the Davide di Donatello, Globo d'Oro, Nastro d'Argento, and an Oscar nomination. Bacalov was also recognized for his work on "La Tregua" and "Vangelo secondo Matteo." In addition to his film work, Bacalov was an active conductor and pianist for radio and television broadcasting and concert associations across Europe, the USA, and Latin America. He performed traditional and contemporary repertoire as well as works by Latin American composers, including his own compositions
