Luis E. Bacalov (August 30, 1933 – November 15, 2017) was an Argentinian-born Italian pianist and composer. Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, he began his music education at the age of five, studying under Enrique Baremboim and later Berta Sujovolsky. Bacalov started performing in Argentina at a young age, playing as a soloist, in duo with violinist Alberto Lisy, and in various chamber music ensembles. He also researched popular music in Latin America and worked with Colombia Radio and Television. From the 1960s onward, Bacalov became an active composer for cinema in Italy and France, collaborating with notable directors such as Lattuada, Damiani, Scola, and Pasolini. His work on the soundtrack for "Il Postino," directed by Michael Radford, earned him multiple awards and nominations, including the Davide di Donatello and the Oscar Prize. He also received nominations for "La Tregua" and "Vangelo secondo Matteo." In addition to composing, Bacalov was a conductor and pianist for various broadcasting companies and concert associations across Europe, the USA, and Latin America. He performed traditional and contemporary repertoire, as well as works by Latin-American composers, including his own compositions.
