Luz Eliana Barraza Valenzuela, known as Luz Eliana, was born on September 19, 1939, in Valparaíso, Chile. She is a prominent singer associated with the Chilean "Nueva Ola" music movement, which blended rock 'n' roll into its sound. Luz Eliana began her musical career in 1961 on the Calducho program at Radio Portales de Valparaíso and initially performed with the Roberto Inglez orchestra. In 1962, she moved to Santiago with producer Camilo Fernández to record her first songs, adopting her stage name suggested by radio host Miguel Davagnino. She gained recognition for adapting international hits into Spanish and also explored jazz, earning the nickname "the Chilean Ella Fitzgerald." In 1968, she won the international contest at the IX Viña del Mar Song Festival with her performance of "Palabras." She returned to the festival in 1977 with "De cara al viento," which earned her third place and the award for most popular artist. After a fourteen-year hiatus, Luz Eliana returned to the stage in 2001 at the XLII Viña del Mar Song Festival, performing alongside her new wave contemporaries. She continued to make appearances throughout Chile and participated in the 2003 album Generations. Two times in duet, recording "Although I know" with the group Papanegro.
