Lydia Tomkiw was an American poet, singer, and songwriter born on August 6, 1959, in Chicago, Illinois. She passed away on September 4, 2007, in Phoenix, Arizona. Tomkiw published several poetry collections, including 'Ballpoint Erection' (first issued in 1978 and reissued in 1979), 'Obsessions' (1979), and 'Popgun Sonatas' (1980), all through MOD Distribution in Chicago. She later collaborated with Don Hedeker to form Algebra Suicide, releasing their first printed volume, 'Big Skin', in 1986 as an Audio + Text package on Cause & Effect. Her final text-only collection published during her lifetime was 'Dreadful Swimmers' in 1989 by Wide Skirt Press in the UK. In 2020, a book featuring facsimile reproductions of her previous works, texts set to music, and a wealth of previously unpublished poems edited by Dan Shepelavy was published by Universal Exports Of America, which included a free download of 'Big Skin'.
