Lynyrd Skynyrd is an American rock band that gained fame for popularizing the Southern hard rock genre during the 1970s. The band was originally formed in 1964 in Jacksonville, Florida, under the name "Noble Five." They became widely recognized for their energetic live performances and iconic songs such as "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Free Bird." Tragically, at the height of their success, three members lost their lives in an airplane crash in 1977, which ended the band's most popular lineup. In 1987, surviving members reunited for a tour, featuring Johnny Van Zant, the younger brother of original lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, as the new frontman. A version of the band continues to tour and record, with Gary Rossington being the last of the original members until his passing on March 5, 2023. Lynyrd Skynyrd was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on March 13, 2006.
