Madala Kunene, born in 1951 in Cato Manor, is a renowned musician who moved to Kwa-Mashu, near Durban, after his family was evicted by the Apartheid government. Despite being raised in a family of prominent academics, he chose not to attend school, enduring regular beatings for his decision. This defiance highlighted his unconventional nature. At the age of 7, he began busking on Durban’s beachfront, crafting his first guitar from a cooking oil tin and fish gut for the strings, and quickly became a popular performer in the townships.
