Madalyn Merkey is a Californian composer known for her work in acoustic research and live computer music. She began her artistic journey as a visual artist at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago before transitioning to sound and time-based art. Merkey has released two albums of her vocal experiments, Scent (2012) and Valley Girl (2014), on Matt Mondanile’s New Images imprint. Her innovative use of digital voice processing creates a unique effect, allowing the human voice to shift between foreground and background, challenging listeners' perception of the sound source. In her recent projects, she combines traditional instruments with electronics during live performances. By exploring the acoustic principles of instruments, she develops real-time synthesis programs that generate complementary timbral events and contrasting scales. This exploration has led to a series of site-specific electronic music performances that focus on location, room acoustics, and surround sound as foundational elements for sound material development.
