Mahalia Jackson was an American gospel singer born on October 26, 1911, in New Orleans, Louisiana. She passed away on January 27, 1972, in Evergreen Park, Chicago, Illinois. Known as the "Queen of Gospel," Jackson had a career that spanned 40 years and played a crucial role in the development and spread of gospel blues in black churches across the United States. Despite the challenges of racial segregation during her time, she achieved remarkable success in her recording career, selling an estimated 22 million records and performing for integrated and secular audiences in concert halls worldwide. Notably, at the funeral of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., she sang "Precious Lord," his favorite hymn, which he had requested. In recognition of her contributions to music, she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997.
