Main was formed in 1990 by Robert Hampson and Scott Dawson, both of whom previously played in the band Loop. Active from 1991 to 1998, Main aimed to deconstruct the traditional use of guitars and recontextualize them, altering their language through the incorporation of various sounds from field recordings and close mic recordings of found objects. Their initial work included two EPs, after which a third member joined for additional projects until leaving in 1993. Over time, particularly following Dawson's departure in 1996, Main increasingly moved away from guitar usage, focusing more on field recordings as the primary source of their sound.
