Maitre Gazonga was born on May 27, 1948, and passed away on April 1, 2006. He studied in Fort Lamy, now known as Djamena, and initially worked as a bookkeeper. At the age of 21, he decided to pursue a career in music. He co-founded the band Orchestre Saltanat Africa but soon left to form his own group, L'International Challal. Gazonga drew inspiration from the folk music of various regions in Chad.
