Malaria was a German all-female new wave band formed in Berlin in January 1981. Initially a duo consisting of Bettina Köster and Gudrun Gut, both of whom had previous musical experience, they recorded their debut 12" at Christoph Franke Studio in Berlin, produced by Klaus Krüger. The lineup expanded with the addition of Manon Duursma, Christine Hahn, and Susanne Kuhnke, leading to the release of their album "Emotion!" in 1982. After releasing "Beat the Distance" in 1984, the band disbanded, with Köster and Hahn relocating to the US. In 1991, Köster, Gut, and Duursma reunited to restart Malaria.
