Malcolm Cecil (January 9, 1937 - March 28, 2021) was an English bassist and inventor best known for creating the TONTO synthesizer, which stands for "The Original New Timbral Orchestra." This instrument is recognized as the world's first and still the largest multitimbral polyphonic analog synthesizer. Born in London, Cecil was a founding member of Tonto's Expanding Head Band and played bass in an early formation of Blues Incorporated. In addition to his work as a synthesizer programmer and performer, he was a Grammy-winning recording engineer, producing for notable artists such as Stevie Wonder, The Isley Brothers, Richie Havens, Minnie Ripperton, Steven Stills, and Joan Baez, among others.
