Malka Spigel is a musician and visual artist who emerged in the music and art scene as a Tel-Aviv exile in early 1980s Amsterdam. She co-founded the band Minimal Compact with Berry Sakharof and Samy Birnbach, where she played bass and contributed vocals. The band pioneered a minimal post-punk/punk-funk sound, gaining a large following in continental Europe from 1981 to 1988. During this time, they collaborated with notable figures such as Tuxedomoon's Peter Principle and Wire's Colin Newman, and Malka's vocals featured in Wim Wenders' film "Wings of Desire." In 1986, Malka began a working partnership with Colin Newman, which led to their marriage that same year. They moved to London in 1992 and established the Swim label to release their own projects, including Malka's debut album "Rosh Balata." In addition to her musical endeavors, Malka developed her career as a visual artist, culminating in a degree in fine art with a focus on video and photography from 2000 to 2002. She has created video work with Immersion and produced video clips for Vapourspace and Minimal Compact. Malka is also recognized for her extensive photography collection, primarily shot with a lomo LCA camera, earning her a prominent place in the lomo community.
