Johnny Malone is a singer and songwriter who formed the group Malone Barnes and Spontaneous Simplicity with saxophonist and flautist Allan Barnes while they were students at Howard University in Washington, D.C., during the 1960s. The collaboration led to the creation of "Freedom Serenade," inspired by a tune from Sun-Ra. Following the album's release, family commitments took Barnes to the West Coast, while Malone continued his career working with Carl Pope.
