Mandré was the alter ego of a musician who, after disbanding his previous group, signed a contract with a record label and developed the persona of Mandré. While his earlier work focused on funk and soul, Mandré allowed him to incorporate electronic elements and shift towards a more spacey funk and disco sound. In both albums and live performances, Mandré was depicted as the "mystery man from outer space," always hiding his face behind a futuristic mask resembling a robot. He was promoted as being "funkier than" other artists. However, after releasing three albums that went largely unnoticed, he ended his relationship with the label to pursue independent production. He retained the rights and title to the Mandré name and released a final album, "Mandré 4," by himself in 1980.
