Formed in 1969 by keyboardist Manfred Mann and bassist Mike Hugg after the breakup of Manfred Mann’s popular R&B group, Manfred Mann Chapter Three marked a bold turn toward experimental jazz-rock. The band fused progressive rock structures with jazz instrumentation, featuring brass-heavy arrangements and improvisational energy. Across two albums, their sound reflected the late ’60s fusion landscape—adventurous, cerebral, and fearless. Though short-lived, Chapter Three bridged Mann’s pop success to the more progressive direction he would pursue with Manfred Mann’s Earth Band.
