Manfred Mann's Earth Band (MMEB) was formed in 1971 by South African-born keyboardist Manfred Mann, who had previously achieved success in the 1960s with a pop group named after him and had a less successful stint in jazz. The band's sound was significantly defined by Mann's use of the Moog synthesizer. MMEB enjoyed considerable success during the mid-1970s and early 1980s but was disbanded in 1987 when Mann grew frustrated with the challenge of producing hit records. Following this, he initiated a project focused on Native American music, which resulted in one album. Mann reformed MMEB in 1991, and the band has since released records and toured extensively in Europe. Current members include Manfred Mann on keyboards and vocals, a guitarist and vocalist who has been with the band since its inception, a drummer who rejoined in 2016, a bass guitarist who has been with the band since 1991, and a vocalist who joined in 2011. The band has seen numerous former members over the years, including drummers, guitarists, and vocalists, with several having passed away.
