Manna is a Sheffield-based duo consisting of Jonathan and Kevin, who come from diverse musical backgrounds. They have credits as producers, writers, and musicians on records released by Elektra, Polydor, Wau! Mr. Modo, BMG, and Island, with their studio serving as a base for numerous chart records worldwide. Since their collaboration on their own music, they have been able to explore their personal idiosyncratic tastes. Their first release as Manna was the acclaimed R-Earth in 1992 on Wau! Mr. Modo Records. Their self-titled debut album, which features a remarkable blend of ambient, techno, and dub, was released on Apollo Records last January and is considered a genuine revelation in its genre. The album showcases strange combinations of samples and sounds from instruments like the Oberheim and Prophet 5, mixed with vintage equipment such as the Synthi HiFli, all recorded without multitrack tape, with tracks mixed as they were being written. For live performances, Manna is joined by E-bow guitar player Clive Dutch, fully utilizing the Synthi HiFli along with a range of computer and video graphics. Their debut live performance at the Ambient Weekend in 1995 at De Melkweg in Amsterdam was noted for its impressive potential. "Mr. Echo, go to hell. This is Manna from heaven." (from the film Robinson Crusoe On Mars)
