Mantronix was founded by Kurtis el Khaleel, a Jamaican-born artist who moved to Canada and later to New York in the late 1970s. While working at Manhattan's Downtown Records, he met Haitian-born MC Tee, whose real name is Touré Embden. The duo created a demo tape that caught the attention of William Socolov, president of Sleeping Bag Records, who signed them. Their debut single, "Fresh is the Word," was released, followed by their first full-length album, The Album, in 1986. At that time, Mantronik also took on the role of A&R representative at Sleeping Bag, where he signed new talent. By 1987, they transitioned to Capitol/EMI. After their third album, MC Tee left to join the Air Force, prompting Mantronik to replace him with a cousin of LL Cool J and DJ Dee, who is also Mantronik's cousin. In the mid-1990s, Mantronik returned to the music scene under the name Kurtis Mantronik, providing remixes for artists such as EPMD, the Future Sound of London, and Violet.
