Mariah Carey is an American Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter, born on March 27, 1969, in Huntington, NYC, USA. Noted for her remarkable vocal range, she was recognized by Billboard magazine as the most successful artist of the 90s in the United States. Carey has been married twice: first from 1993 until her divorce in 1998, and then from 2008 until her divorce in 2016. Music critic Jim Farber of the Daily News praised Carey's vocal abilities, stating she has "a range wide enough to cover all the octaves between an alto and a soprano," and noted her agility in moving between those roles. Her vocal trademark includes the ability to sing in the whistle register. Carey has cited Minnie Riperton as the greatest influence on her singing technique, and from a young age, she sought to emulate Riperton's high notes as her vocal range expanded. In 2003, her voice was ranked first in MTV and Blender magazine's countdown of the 22 Greatest Voices in Music, as voted by fans and readers in an online poll. Carey remarked on the poll, saying it was an enormous compliment, although she does not see herself in that light. She has a Lyric Soprano vocal type but considers herself an alto, with a vocal range of 5 octaves, 2 notes, and a semi-tone (E2-G#7). In 2007, she was inducted into the Songwriters
