Marie Knight was an American contralto gospel singer, pianist, and songwriter, born on June 1, 1920, in Sanford, Florida. She began her recording career in 1946 and later recorded duets for Decca. In 1954, she released her first solo record and two years later switched to Mercury Records. Although she ventured into non-religious music in the mid-1960s, she did not achieve significant success in that genre. Throughout her career, she toured with notable artists such as Brook Benton, the Drifters, and Clyde McPhatter, and frequently reunited onstage with Sister Rosetta Tharpe. Marie Knight passed away on August 30, 2009, in Harlem, New York, at the age of 89.
