Marilyn Barbarin is a New Orleans singer known for her deep ballad "One Little Word for Nola," which showcases a first-class song structure and impressive harmony background vocals, likely featuring a lovely horn arrangement by Wardell Q. While funk fans may prefer the track "Reborn" from her Bo-Sound 45, "Believe Me" is considered a superior song that highlights Marilyn's breathy tones and features a pleasant jazzy feel in its chord changes. Her disco-influenced 45 "Make It Alone"/"Stop Before You Start" is highly sought after today, and her 80s Olympia release "Will You Still Love Me" is another standout, characterized by a strong mid-paced rhythm and excellent male background vocals. All of Marilyn's recordings are difficult to find, yet none are considered subpar. She continues to perform actively in the Crescent City, as evidenced by her appearances on recent compilation CDs.
