Art Tripp, born Marimba on September 10th, 1944, in Athens, Ohio, grew up in Pittsburgh. He became a percussionist in 1962 and played and recorded with The Mothers of Invention from 1968 until the end of 1969. After that, he joined Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band for four years. He appeared on the credits of the Beefheart album "Spotlight Kid" under both aliases. Eventually, Art Tripp gave up music and became a chiropractor. He was also a member of another group.
