Maripol is a French artist, art director, stylist, designer, and photographer. Born in Morocco to French parents, she moved to New York in 1976. She worked as an art director in the showroom of stylist Elio Fiorucci and, in the early 1980s, began to invent styles and transform the image of prominent artists. Maripol was an instrumental presence and influence during the rise of Madonna, creating a line of official jewelry and accessories for the "Like a Virgin" tour. Her original rubber bracelets, rosaries, and cross-shaped jewelry contributed to the Madonna phenomenon, while lace and torn stockings became a fashion sensation for millions of teenagers worldwide. In 2010, a book was released that defined her as "The girl with the Polaroid," reflecting her time spent at the legendary Studio 54, which became a second home and a rich source of material for her portraits.
