Dr. Marisa Gatti-Taylor, a native of San Marino, was educated in Detroit, USA, after her family emigrated in 1954. While pursuing her doctorate, she worked as a soloist for many Italian-American churches in Detroit, noting the importance of classic hymns like "Ave Maria" to the liturgical life of these communities. Marisa began her professional singing career at the age of 15, performing with various combos and orchestras. In 1966, she recorded her only record at the age of 20, which, although not officially released, was played in venues such as restaurants, bowling alleys, and clubs throughout Greater Detroit, and featured in many jukeboxes. While her music career took a backseat to her academic pursuits, Gatti-Taylor continues to perform for and with her students in class and at recitals in the area. In addition to her work as a translator and teacher of Italian, she co-composed a national anthem for San Marino with her daughter.
