He studied classical music but developed an interest in jazz, rock, and pop. In the 1970s, Isham became a touring and session musician, collaborating with notable artists such as Charles Lloyd, the Beach Boys, and Van Morrison, and later appeared as a guest musician on albums by well-known artists like David Sylvian, the Rolling Stones, and Suzanne Vega. In the 1980s, his early solo releases showcased a strong emphasis on electronics, spanning from New Age (notably all Windham Hill releases) to abstract soundtracks.
