Marlena Shaw, born on September 22, 1939, in New Rochelle, New York, U.S.A., was a prominent figure in the soul music scene. She began her recording career with the Cadet label in the 1960s before moving to Blue Note in the early 1970s, where her powerful voice quickly gained recognition. By the mid-1970s, as disco began to influence Blue Note's sound, Marlena released "It's Better Than Walkin' Out," marking the label's first 12" release. In February 1977, she transitioned to Columbia Records, which led to improved record sales. Her first album with Columbia featured the disco track "Pictures And Memories." Marlena is perhaps best remembered by disco fans for her cover of Diana Ross's "Touch Me In The Morning," which was part of a disco medley on the album that included several classic soul tunes from the late 1960s and early 1970s, such as "Love Dancin'" and "Haven't We Been In Love Before." Marlena Shaw passed away on January 19, 2024.
