Marlene Dietrich was a German actress and singer born on December 27, 1901, in Berlin-Schöneberg, German Empire. She gained international attention for her role as Lola Lola in Josef von Sternberg's film The Blue Angel (1930), which led to a contract with Paramount Pictures. Dietrich settled in the United States in 1930 and became a naturalized American citizen in 1937. During World War II, she was a prominent entertainer and continued to appear in several post-war films. From the 1950s to the 1970s, she toured internationally as a live-show performer. However, her visit to West Germany in 1960 for a concert tour received a mixed reception, prompting her to vow never to return. An accident on stage in September 1975, which resulted in a broken thigh bone, largely ended her career. Dietrich spent her last 13 years in seclusion in her Paris apartment, where she passed away on May 6, 1992.
