Martha and the Muffins is a Canadian band that emerged from the early punk, new wave, and art pop scene in 1977, primarily centered around clubs along Toronto's Queen Street West and the Ontario College of Art, where several band members were students. They were signed by Virgin Records UK and recorded their debut album, Metro Music, at The Manor near Oxford, England, in 1979. The band's single "Echo Beach" became a top ten hit worldwide in 1980, leading to extensive tours in Britain, Europe, and North America. Over the years, they have released seven studio albums internationally, with three co-produced by Daniel Lanois. In 1983, lead vocalist Martha Johnson and guitarist Mark Gane restructured the band as a duo, briefly renaming themselves M+M. Their dance single "Black Stations/White Stations" reached number 2 on Billboard's Dance Chart in 1984. Throughout the 1990s, they focused on scoring music for television and film projects. Inspired by the birth of their daughter in 1992, Martha created an album of original children's music titled Songs From The Tree House, which won the 1996 Juno Award for Best Children's Album.
