Martha High, born Martha Harvin in Victoria, Virginia, is a renowned vocalist who has made significant contributions to the music industry. She began her career in Washington, D.C., and attended high school with several notable figures in the soul music fraternity, including the Four Jewels and Margie Clarke. At the age of 18, she was discovered by James Brown while performing with The Four Jewels at the Apollo Theater in New York. Following this, she joined the James Brown Revue, where she was later renamed Martha High and dubbed The Goddess of Soul. She performed with Brown for an impressive 32 years, making her the longest-serving singer in his entourage. In 1995, Martha left James Brown's team to tour with other artists. Throughout her career, she has shared the stage with legends such as Michael Jackson, Bo Diddley, and B.B. King. She appeared in the film "The Blues Brothers" and the television series "New York Undercover," and has performed on over 50 television shows hosted by prominent figures like Johnny Carson, Don Cornelius, Jay Leno, David Letterman, Arsenio Hall, Jerry Springer, and Jonathan Ross. After spending 16 years with Maceo Parker and his band, Martha High has established herself as a highly sought-after performer with a successful solo career.
