Martha Starr (1945-2002) was an American singer who began her musical journey at the age of 12 in the choir at Sweet Canaan Baptist Church. She attended St. Francis Elementary School and Sterling High School in Greenville, South Carolina. In 1964, following the death of her grandmother, Martha moved to Michigan, where she worked for the Ford Motor Company. During this time, she had a brief relationship and later performed with various artists. In the mid-1960s, she released three records on Thelma Records, which have since gained popularity within the "Northern Soul" scene. In 1975, she relocated to California.
