Martha Wash is an American vocalist born in San Francisco, California, on December 28, 1953. She began her career as a backing vocalist and later became part of a group that was renamed in 1982. In 1989, Wash was asked by an Italian act to record and demo their songs. Black Box retained Wash's uncredited vocals on their debut album, Dreamland (1990), leading her to sue and win her case. In the same year, another group released "Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)," which also used uncredited vocal parts that Wash had recorded. She successfully sued the group for sleeve credits in 1991.
