Martim Codax was a Galician medieval jogral from Santiago de Compostela, Galicia, in present-day Spain. He lived during the twelfth century, a period marked by the golden age of pilgrimages and the cult of Santiago, which saw significant development as a center of devotion for Christianity. Codax is notable for being one of the few poets of his time whose original music has been preserved. His work is situated within the historical context of the Galician-Portuguese troubadour lyric, and he stands out for his contributions to this rich literary tradition. The Wise King, a Castilian ruler, also utilized the Galician language in his court, where many troubadours, including Codax, expressed lyrical themes. Codax's compositions are part of a broader artistic, literary, and musical heritage from Medieval Europe.
