Martyn Bennett (February 17, 1971 – January 30, 2005) was a Canadian-born Scottish piper, violinist, composer, and producer known for his influential role in the evolution of modern Celtic fusion, which blends traditional Celtic music with contemporary styles. Born in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, he was raised in the Cordroy Valley among Gaelic-speaking Scottish immigrants from Canna and Moidart. At the age of 19, he became involved in the rave scene in Glasgow, where he developed his unique sound by combining traditional Gaelic music with house, hip-hop, and dance elements. Bennett gained recognition for his work in the Gaelic/dance arena, composing scores for European theatrical productions, including "The Haunting of Billy Marshall," an adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's "Kidnapped," and David Harrower's "Knives in Hens." His contributions extended to television and film scores, as well as notable solo performances. Highlights of his career included serving as the personal piper for the President of Tanzania during his visit to Edinburgh, touring the U.S. with a Green Linnet recording artist, and performing at the Edinburgh Hogmanay for crowds exceeding 90,000 people. He also entertained at the premiere of "Braveheart" at Stirling Castle. In November 2000, Bennett was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma, and he passed away on January 30, 2005.
