Marva Whitney was an American funk vocalist and artist, born on May 1, 1944, in Kansas City, Kansas. She began her musical journey at the age of 16 when she joined the Alma Whitney Singers, a Kansas gospel group. During this time, she married the brother-in-law of the group's leader, adopting the name Marva Whitney. Known for her raw and brassy vocal style, she is regarded by many funk enthusiasts as one of the standout music divas of her era. Marva Whitney passed away on December 22, 2012, in her hometown of Kansas City, Kansas, at the age of 68.
