Mary Hopkin is a singer-songwriter born on May 5, 1950, in Pontardawe, Glamorgan, Wales, UK. Her career began to flourish after she appeared on the UK television talent show Opportunity Knocks in 1968. Shortly thereafter, she signed with the Beatles' label, with her most famous recording being "Those Were the Days" (APPLE 2), a Russian song composed by Boris Fomin, which featured English lyrics written by another individual who later claimed the song as his own. In 1970, she achieved notable recognition by coming second in the Eurovision Song Contest with Britain's entry "Knock Knock Who's There." In the early 1970s, Hopkin partially withdrew from the pop music scene to focus on raising her children but continued to write songs, record, and contribute vocals to various music acts, including Marc Bolan, David Bowie, Osibisa, The Strawbs, and Thin Lizzy. She also made television appearances, including hosting her own shows, and since the 1980s, she has collaborated with various artists and released numerous recordings through her own music company. Mary was married from 1971 until her divorce in 1981 and has two children.
