The Mary Jane Girls were formed in 1979 by Rick James, who initially hired them as backup singers for his tour. To compete with Prince's girl group in 1982, James secured a deal for the girls with Motown and named them after his funk hit "Mary Jane," a nod to his fondness for marijuana. The group members were given sexy stage names: JoJo, Candi, Maxi, and Cheri. Their self-titled debut album achieved instant success on the soul charts, featuring hits like "Boys," "All Night Long," and "Candy Man." The original lineup included Joanna McDuffie, Lisa Sarna, and Tabby Johnson, credited as "Mary Jane Girls" on releases from 1981 and 1982. In 1985, Cheri (Ann Bailey) left the group and was replaced by Corvette. They released their second and final album, "Only Four You," which included successful singles such as "Wild and Crazy Love," "Break It Up," and their biggest hit, "In My House." Their last release was a remake of "Walk Like a Man" from the soundtrack of the film "A Fine Mess." Due to Rick James' issues with Motown, the group was dropped, and although there were rumors of a new album with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis in 1987, it was never released. In 2009, Maxi and Cheri reunited to tour as MJG Starring Maxi and Cheri
