Masahiko Togashi was a renowned Japanese jazz drummer and percussionist, born on March 22, 1940, in Tokyo. He gained acclaim as a jazz drummer in his teens while playing in Sadao Watanabe's group. Togashi was a key figure in the development of free jazz in Japan during the late 1960s, collaborating with notable musicians such as Masahiko Sato, Masayuki Takayanagi, and Yosuke Yamashita. In January 1970, Togashi experienced a life-altering accident that resulted in the loss of the use of his legs. Undeterred, he created a new drum kit and made a remarkable return to performing after eighteen months. Throughout his career, he collaborated with various international jazz artists, including Don Cherry, Steve Lacy, Charlie Haden, Mal Waldron, and Paul Bley. His most recognized album in Japan is likely "Spiritual Nature," released in 1975. As his health declined, Togashi retired from active performance in 2002, choosing to focus on composition and painting until his passing on August 22, 2007.
