Harmon Bethea, known as The Mask Man, led a group originally called The Cap-Tans, later renamed The Agents. Alongside his fellow members Tyrone Gray, Johnny Hood, and Paul Williams, they recorded for various labels throughout the 1950s and early 1960s but did not achieve significant success. In an effort to revitalize their act, Bethea introduced a gimmick by donning a mask reminiscent of the "Lone Ranger," transforming the group into The Agents. Their first recording under this new identity was released in 1964 on Gama Records. Incorporating elements of comedy and social commentary into their performances, the group found success with hits like "One Eye Open" in 1968 and "My Wife, My Dog, My Cat" the following year, both recorded for Dynamo Records in New York City.
