The Masqueraders, a soul music group with a history dating back to 1958, originated in Dallas, Texas. The group was initially formed by middle-schoolers Charlie Moore and Robert Tex Wrightsil, along with brothers Johnny and Lawrence Davis, and "Little" Charlie Gibson. They recorded several singles under the name "the Stairs" before undergoing lineup changes, leading to the formation of the Masqueraders with new members Lee Wesley Jones, Harold Thomas, and David Sanders. Their recorded debut came in 1963 with "A Man's Temptation." After releasing "Talk About a Woman" in 1965, they auditioned for Motown but were told their style was too similar to the Temptations. Stranded in Detroit, they performed at the Twenty Grand Club to earn money for their return trip, eventually recording five singles for La Beat label from 1966 to 1967, though none achieved commercial success. The group later recorded eight singles at American Studios in Memphis, with their minor hit "I Don't Want Nobody to Lead Me On." They were credited as Lee Jones & the Sounds of Soul for the 1968 single "This Heart Is Haunted." Their work during this period showcased a gospel-influenced deep soul sound, leading to their first true national hit, "I'm Just an Average Guy," in 1968.
