Master Wilburn Burchette was an American musician born in 1939 in California. He was known for playing the guitar and synthesizer, as well as for his role as a "mail order mystic." Burchette's fascination with the occult began at the age of 12, leading him to explore Tibetan mysticism alongside his musical pursuits. He was largely self-taught in both guitar and mysticism, and he spent time teaching classical guitar. Burchette constructed an Impro guitar made of six different woods, with mahogany as the base and inlays of abalone shells on the neck. Between 1971 and 1977, he released seven albums of guitar and synthesizer music, primarily through his Burchette Brothers label, which he ran with his brother Kenneth, a chemist. He advertised his albums through mail order ads in magazines such as Fate Magazine, Beyond Reality, and Gnostica News. Alongside his music, he offered a seven-part, block-printed “Psychic Meditation Course” designed to teach people how to listen to music, complete with his instrumental records and ornate hand-drawn cover designs. In 1977, Burchette abruptly discarded all of his musical explorations. He was found dead in 2023 at the age of 84 in El Cajon, California, where he lived with his brother Kenneth, who was also found dead at the age of 76.
