The Masters of Soul, originally known as The Royal Masters, were a musical group consisting of Eddie Webb, Fred Kibble, Harold Hopkins, Clarence Bellard, and Tom McPherson. They made their debut in 1963 with a release on Philadelphia's Guyden Records, but it did not gain traction. After a five-year hiatus, the group saw a lineup change in 1968 when original member Jerry Porter was replaced by Tom McPherson, and they briefly adopted the name Masters of Houston. Under this name, they released a single titled "Please Wait For Me (My Darling)" on Ovide Records, a Houston-based label owned by Skipper Lee. However, this name change lasted for only one release. Subsequently, they returned to the name Masters of Soul and recorded five more singles for Ovide, as well as tracks for Capitol and Duke Records.
