Material is an American experimental punk-jazz-funk-noise-electro band founded around 1978/79 by a bassist and a keyboard player. The name Material served not only as the band's identity but also as an alias for the intensive production work of the duo, collaborating with various artists. One member left the band in 1985, and in the 1990s, Material shifted its focus towards a more world, Indian, Afro, ambient, and dub-oriented sound.
