Matmos is an American experimental electronic duo formed by Drew Daniel and Martin Schmidt, active since the mid-1990s and based in Baltimore, Maryland. The band derives its name from a "seething lake of evil slime" featured in the 1968 cult sci-fi film. Known for their postmodernist approach, Matmos creates "listenable" music using a diverse array of unconventional objects, meticulously listing all samples and sources in their releases. Their materials have included amplified crayfish nerve tissue, cow uterus, snails, contact microphones on human hair, life support systems, inflatable blankets, solid gold coins, and plastic riot police shields. The duo is recognized for their concept albums, taking turns to choose the thematic focus of each record. Their explorations have included topics such as "surgical procedures" (2001), "Western/country" music (1999), "Medieval music" (2003), "various types of plastics" (2019), "Whirlpool washing machine" (2016), and "Ganzfeld experiment & parapsychology" (2013). Daniel and Schmidt met in San Francisco in the early 1990s and began collaborating, self-releasing an 8-bit mono mixtape/demo cassette around 1993.
