Maurice Williams was an American singer and songwriter born on April 26, 1938, in Lancaster, South Carolina. He passed away on August 5, 2024, in Charlotte, North Carolina. Williams discovered his passion for music at a young age, leading to the formation of his first group, the Royal Charms, during his teenage years. This group later evolved into Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs, marking the beginning of his storied career. Williams wrote several notable songs, including "Little Darlin'," which became a hit for The Diamonds, and "Stay," a doo-wop classic released in 1960. "Stay" captivated audiences with its catchy melody and concise runtime of under two minutes, soaring to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart and becoming one of the shortest songs ever to achieve such success. Its enduring appeal led to numerous covers by artists such as the Four Seasons and Jackson Browne, giving it new life across several decades.
