Mavis John, originally from Clifton Hill and later residing in Belmont, is celebrated as one of Trinidad & Tobago’s most talented singers and songwriters. She became a teen idol during the 1960s and 70s and experienced a resurgence in the local music scene in the 1990s and 2000s. Unlike many of her contemporaries who primarily focused on Calypso and Soca, Mavis showcased her signature voice across Blues, Jazz, and Soul genres. Although she dedicated many years to her family and teaching career, she never lost her creative spark. Mavis was also an active thespian, starring in the play "Shades of I-She," for which she won a Cacique Award in 1996. Her 2001 album, "Mavis Sings," received critical acclaim and reignited public interest in her music. Mavis has consistently performed locally, regionally, and internationally, including a notable appearance at the St. Kitts Music Festival in June 2003, where she shared the stage with renowned artists such as Ashanti, Shaggy, Jeffrey Osbourne, and The Temptations.
